INN FROM THE COLD
Inn From The Cold believes that people are valuable. People should not die in extreme weather because they are experiencing homelessness. We provide a dedicated space to keep people alive during dangerous weather. Our program is opened December 15th - March 31st 9pm-8am.
There is a homeless crisis across the GTA, a rising concern in South Mississauga. 100 deaths per year in the GTA are related to people who are homeless when exposed to extreme weather. We want to see that number drop to 0.
Inn From The Cold (IFTC), an overnight program at West Edge Community Church that provides a warm place for people experiencing homeless to spend the night during the winter months.
We are looking for a compassionate and responsible Shift Supervisor to manage shifts (2 staff), and guests/clients and submit daily reports to the Region of Peel.
This is a full-time contract position from Dec-March 31, 9PM – 8AM. The program runs nightly. We are seeking to fill this role immediately.
As part of a faith-based team, be responsible for the overnight operations of the program, including but not limited to:
-Establish empathetic rapport with guests/clients and use intervention and mediation skills to defuse potential conflict.
-Assist the Program Lead with Organizing and scheduling teams Respond to inquiries from the IFTC Telephone #, voice mail, and email within a timely manner and contact other service provides (e.g. EMS, shelters The Compass, etc.) when required.
-Insure Covid signs are posted.
-When the person arrives, if the facility is at capacity, arrange for the transfer of the person to another facility or motel.
-Ensure guest information is recorded for Region of Peel reporting
-Review the code of conduct and Covid protocols with new guests and take their touchless temperature.
-Ensure guests are compliant with COVID-19 screening protocols. If not, direct them to the appropriate site (hotel, hospital, etc.)
-Maintain confidentiality regarding organizational operations and personal details of clients.
-Enforce COVID protocols by observing guests and reminding, where necessary, that masks are to be kept on and worn properly (unless sleeping) and that physical distancing is maintained.
-Report any persistent violators to the person-in-charge.
-Ensure availability of necessary commodities per the IFTC Guidelines.
-Complete incident reports for any incidents encountered during the shift.
-Other activities that may, from time to time. be assigned by the IFTC committee.
-Supervise and assist the Support Workers
-Provide recommendations on how policies, procedures, and guest services can be enhanced, particularly due to COVID.
-Combination of education or relevant experience providing support to homeless and/or marginally housed, with mental health, addiction, or abuse issues and working in the volunteer sector.
-A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check is required.
-Strong communication, interpersonal skills, and commitment to a teamwork approach.
-Crisis Management and Conflict Prevention Intervention skills. Ability to handle emergency situations
-Flexible, focused, and committed to building a positive team.
-Strong organizational skills, with the ability to adhere to policies and procedures.
-Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with minimal supervision. -Knowledge of Naloxone administration.
-Certificate in First Aid, CPR, and/or Crisis Prevention and Intervention would be an asset.
