I believe that a synonym for faith is adventure. If we follow Jesus who is described as a pioneer, then faith should take us places we've never been. One of the most powerful verses in my life is this one, "Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross..." Hebrews 12:2. If Jesus is our leader, then we're following a pioneer. The church is always at its best when we are pioneers rather than settlers. But somewhere along the line we traded our ships for safety. We've become settlers.

There's this famous account in the bible where the disciples are shipping off to their next adventure. A storm sweeps over the sea while Jesus is asleep in the boat. Terrified, they wake Jesus accusing Him of not caring about their peril. He chastises their faith and calms the storms (Matthew 8).

I wonder if our lives are putting God to sleep? I heard a pastor say, "I wonder if we’re trying to wake God up but it’s just not worth getting up for?" It’s not that God doesn’t care about you. He loves you more than you will ever comprehend. That point was settled on the cross. It’s not that He is disinterested in you. He just may not be interested in what you’re willing to live for. I believe He’s waiting for you to live for more so that you actually need Him to be awake.

Do we really believe that Jesus sacrificed all He did, and history unfolded with all the miracles and movements to get us to this point where we can just settle? God stepped into human history, took on flesh and blood, and walked with us. He was brutalized, died, resurrected. He did all of this to save humanity. Can we really believe all He wants for us is to get in the boat and stay at the shore? If you follow Jesus, you are embracing His mission. You are here to save the world! That means you're going to have to throw off the bowline and head into the stormy seas. It is a part of the adventure.

This is what I want for you. To live a life of adventure. I don't want you to stay moored to the pier. You weren't made for the harbour. You were meant to be at sea. I want you to be in the storm because that means you're pushing to a place of faith. Don't be surprised when the waves break over your vessel and the winds howl. You don't become a skilled sailor by sailing calm seas. Jesus is teaching you something you need to learn in the storm. He needs you to become skilled through the storm. Lean into it. Feel the spray of the ocean. Howl louder than the waves. Be more ferocious than the waves. You are on an adventure. "So toss the bowlines, catch the trade winds" and go where God leads. Live by faith. Live a life of adventure.

How To Live Your Adventure

1. Get a Mentor: Someone who is where you want to be.

2. Fill Up: Read, listen, watch subjects that will fill you for where you're going. Remember this adventure is not about you. If your vision only includes you then it's too small. It's about serving others. You can't give out good stuff if you don't put good stuff in.

3. Dream Team: Get a group of friends and share your goals with them and ask them to hold you accountable. Positive peer pressure to propel you forward.

4. Pray and Listen: Then list and do. Be obedient and don't delay. He's with you.
